Possibly my favorite line from any movie ever. The Wicked Witch of the West flying her broom over Emerald City spelling out these two malevolent words with her witchy green broomstick smoke. I can hear the cackle echoing as she flies off to her castle in The Haunted Forest.
I love the Wizard of Oz. It’s a timeless metaphor for coming to terms with the real us. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain – listen instead to my witty quips and excessive use of pop culture references which prove the coolness and all-around hipness of me. Every single character (with the possible exception of Toto, but who really knows his motivation in the film?) was looking for something to make themselves complete – and that thing they were in search of, was inside them the whole time. Too bad the witch didn’t catch on to the moral of the story a few sccences sooner!
Those all-encompassing words “Surrender Dorothy” carried many meanings – depending on who was listening. For the people of Emerald City, it was a demand that they turn Dorothy over immediately for fear of repercussions. For Dorothy, it was a taunt to give up and stop even trying to win – just surrender. But for the witch, she should have heeded those words – surrender this insane obsession with Dorothy – just let her go. If the witch had just listened to her own warning, she never would have met her pitiful end.
I can’t help but think of my own life, chock full of misguided missions and purposeless projects. And now it’s branded into my mind – SURRENDER.
